It was in 1951 that 10th generation members of the Putnam family converted an old shoe factory building on their property into a spotless candy kitchen on busy Route One, midway between Boston and Newburyport. From a modest beginning, we have grown to a staff of over 30. Putnam Pantry has won national recognition as one of the outstanding candy stores in the country. Our candy is mailed all over the world.

It was here at the Putnam homestead, directly adjoining the candy house, that General Israel Putnam was born on January 7, 1718. Danvers was then called Salem Village. Putnam was active in the French and Indian War, rising to the rank of Major-General. General Putnam was also commander of the forces which resisted the British attack on Bunker Hill.

It was he who spoke the words later to become immortal: “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” “Old Put” was one of the most popular heroes in American history, and was second in rank to General Washington.

Our candies are made from treasured old New England recipes, using only the purest and finest of ingredients. A tour of the immaculate Putnam Pantry kitchens reveals a complex world of candymaking. Large simmering kettles containing white, milk and dark chocolate, pastel toppings and sweet fillings are busily stirred by candy makers. There are over 300 different and delectable varieties of candies from which to choose.

Quality ingredients, charming atmosphere and personable sales folk, all combine to make stopping at Putnam Pantry an experience your taste buds won’t forget.

Although Putnam Pantry Candies has been around for over fifty years, a new generation has recently acquired the business. A true love for the business’s history and nostalgia, combined with the recognition of today’s families’ needs is showcased in the new Putnam Pantry.
